1: Cut
7 strips of different coloured fabrics each measuring 25cms x 80cms, and
stitch the long sides together, with a 2cms seam allowance. Press seams
open (fig 1).
2:
Fold the joined strips in half lengthways, right sides together. Stitch
down the side and across one end, with a 2cms seam allowance as before (
fig 2).
3: Turn
right-side-out through the unstitched end so that the seams are hidden,
press again.
4: Fold
in 2cm of the raw edges of the unjoined end, press and stitch together
(fig 3).
5: With
pencil or chalk, trace the big Q from sheet 2
on to the top stripe, and Quakers for Peace from sheet
3 on to the second stripe (fig 4).
6:
Fill in the letters with white emulsion paint and a water-colour brush
with a good point.
7: Trace the
dove from sheet 4 on to white felt.
Cut this out, and either stitch it on to the fourth stripe or glue it on
using PVA glue. (fig 4)
8: Stitch
loops of cord on the top comers of the banner and slip these on to a
length of dowel or a bamboo cane which is about 4cms wider than the
banner ( fig 5).
9: Tie a
small loop in the middle of a 50cms length of cord. Attach the ends of
the cord tightly to the ends of the dowel (fig 6)
10: Stitch a
length of ribbon to the back of the bottom edge of the banner. The
ribbon should be slightly wider than the width of the banner.
11: Thread
the spiked end of a light-weight tent pole through the loop of cord and
feed the bottom of the pole through the ribbon at the bottom of the
banner ( fig 7)
12: Take the banner to your next
vigil or demo!
