Northern Friends Peace Board
“It's the Quakers and there's loads of them.”
Thus said a policemen into his walkie-talkie as Friends arrived for their bi-monthly Meeting for Worship outside Menwith Hill National (US) Security Agency listening base in August. Anni Rainbow of Leeds MM is part of the Campaign for the Accountability of American Basis (CAAB). She writes: Drove up the hill in an unbelievably heavy monsoon which was joined by thunder and lightening as we crossed the A59...oh dear, never mind, at least it's not cold and we can dry out later (such is a Concern guess!). As we got out of the car the rain miraculously stopped and sky lightened and for the next hour or so God smiled on us and sent the merest sprinkling of raindrops upon us. It was akin to the parting of the Red Sea and not the first time that such things have happened. Feels very much that we are MEANT to continue.
Four powerful ministries plus the now familiar ones from the friendly curlews. And followed by hot drinks, moreish nibbles and time to catch up and share Menwith/CAAB news etc.
CAAB is currently challenging invalid bye-laws which seek to prevent access to the land at Menwith Hill, and have appealed, with others, against the erection of an eight-foot high fence around the base.
Next Meetings for Worship: Saturday 5 December ,Saturday 6 February. All welcome. For more details and copies of CAAB's newsletter contact Anni email: caab.lindis_anni@virgin.net
