Prayer by All Faiths

Our first Chairman, the late Dr. Edward Carpenter, former Dean of Westminster, set us on the interfaith path with the watchword "The peace of the world needs to be prayed for by the faiths of the world". Paradoxically, this has lessened rather than increased the number of people observing the Week, simply because most religious people organise their praying not in partner ship with other faiths but purely in accordance with their own faith traditions. We who have embarked on the interfaith adventure are a small proportion of the world's believers. Whether we like this or not, it is a fact to be recognised.

We want participation in the Week of Prayer for World Peace to be increased. So this year, in addition to producing the customary interfaith prayer leaflet, we appeal to all those who do not subscribe to the interfaith approach to keep the Week in their own way. The same liberal principles which draw us to the interfaith way require us also to respect those who prefer their own traditional paths.

Never has the need for prayer for world peace been more urgent. We believe that the Week of Prayer for World Peace is one valuable way of responding to that need. We have evolved in an interfaith way. But if this way is not for you, please observe this Week of Prayer in ways that you find acceptable. Please let us know how you get on. We are all partners in praying for peace, and we can help each other.
